Best builders in Altrincham (2026): who to call for an extension, a renovation, a basement or a new home
A straight shortlist of the builders people keep finding for Altrincham, Hale and Bowdon, who each one suits, and the five questions to ask before you let anyone price your job.

Search for a builder in Altrincham and you get the same handful of names, plus Checkatrade, MyBuilder and the FMB directory. We're one of the names, based on The Downs, so rather than pretend the others don't exist, here's how we'd shortlist if it were our house.
Everything said about another company below comes from that company's own website. We haven't inspected their work and this isn't a ranking. The list is grouped by the kind of job each firm is set up for, which is what actually decides who you should call.
First, be honest about the size of the job
- Under about £50,000: a garage conversion, a new bathroom, a small single-storey extension. A local general builder or a firm from a directory with plenty of recent reviews is usually the right call.
- £100,000 and up: a big extension, a whole-house refurbishment, a basement under the house, or a new home on your plot. You want a contractor who prices from drawings, runs one programme with every trade in sequence and handles Building Control and party walls.
- One specialist job: a cellar conversion or a single steel beam. A specialist often beats a generalist on price and speed.

Us. We take on the bigger residential jobs from our office at Peel House on The Downs: extensions and remodels from around £100,000, whole-house refurbishments, basement conversions under existing houses, and one-off new homes in Altrincham, Hale, Bowdon and Timperley. The person who prices the job runs it on site. We're FMB members, Constructionline Gold and CITB registered, and we publish our 2026 rates on What things cost.

Five questions to ask any builder before they price
- Who will be on site every day? The person who priced it, a site manager, or a subcontractor you haven't met?
- What's excluded? Kitchens, glazing, electrics, decoration, skips and Building Control fees are the usual gaps between two "similar" prices.
- Provisional sums. How much of the price is a guess, and who carries the risk if it's wrong?
- Trafford Council and party walls. Altrincham, Hale and Bowdon fall under Trafford, and Bowdon and parts of Hale are conservation areas. Ask who handles planning conditions, Building Control and any party wall notices.
- Proof, not logos. Insurance certificates, FMB or TrustMark membership, and two recent clients you can ring.
The short version
Small job: a well-reviewed local builder. One specialist task: a specialist. A big extension, a refurbishment, a basement or a new house in Altrincham, Hale or Bowdon: a main contractor who will be there every day. If that's you, send us the drawings and you'll get a written cost plan from the person who'd run the job.
